About the exam

Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate

Assesses your ability to perform foundational data engineering on the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform: the workspace, architecture and core capabilities; ingestion, loading, transformation and modelling; and ETL with PySpark, Lakeflow Jobs and CI/CD. It closes with troubleshooting, monitoring and optimisation, plus governance and security on the platform.

Step-by-step preparation guide

Start here and follow this plan until exam day

Use PySpark.in as the preparation hub: first verify the official Databricks exam details, then study every domain, practise hands-on and finish with timed mock tests.

Roadmap links open official Databricks documentation or registration pages. Use those pages for source-of-truth exam details, then return to PySpark.in for practice and mocks.

Step 1Understand the exam blueprint

Know the seven sections, their weightings, the 45-question/90-minute format and the registration path before you study.

  • Read the official Data Engineer Associate exam guide and the summary on this page.
  • Note the heaviest sections: Transformation (22%), Ingestion (21%) and Lakeflow Jobs (16%).
  • Confirm the $200 fee, 2-year validity and that code is SQL where possible, otherwise Python.
Step 2Platform, Delta Lake and Unity Catalog

Be fluent in the platform core: Delta Lake ACID/time travel, Unity Catalog objects and choosing the right compute.

  • Learn Delta Lake transactions, time travel and the medallion (bronze/silver/gold) layout.
  • Understand catalogs, schemas, managed vs external tables and volumes in Unity Catalog.
  • Compare job clusters, all-purpose clusters and SQL warehouses on cost and use case.
Step 3Ingestion and loading (21%)

Land data reliably: Auto Loader, COPY INTO, Lakeflow Connect and when to choose each.

  • Practise Auto Loader with schema inference, schemaLocation and schema evolution.
  • Use COPY INTO for incremental, idempotent loads from object storage.
  • Compare Auto Loader vs COPY INTO vs Lakeflow Connect on volume, frequency and governance.
Step 4Transformation and modeling (22%)

The heaviest section: clean bronze to silver, join and reshape DataFrames, and build gold objects.

  • Practise joins (inner, left, broadcast, multi-key, cross, union), filters and exploding arrays.
  • Use dropDuplicates, approx_count_distinct and summary aggregations on real tables.
  • Learn when to build views, materialized views and streaming tables for BI.
  • Review tuning knobs: shuffle.partitions, autoBroadcastJoinThreshold, executor/driver memory.
Step 5Jobs, CI/CD, monitoring and governance

Finish the remaining 51%: orchestration, deployment, troubleshooting and access control.

  • Build Lakeflow Jobs with task dependencies, retries, conditional branching and trigger types.
  • Deploy with Databricks Asset Bundles: targets, variables and overrides across dev/test/prod.
  • Read the Spark UI for skew, spill and shuffle; diagnose cluster and OOM failures.
  • Apply GRANT/REVOKE/DENY, row filters and column masks in Unity Catalog.
Mock-test strategy

Use mocks to decide when you are exam-ready

Do not book the official exam after one lucky score. Use short mocks for diagnosis, full mocks for stamina, and review every wrong answer before retrying.

Book the official exam when:You score 80%+ twice in full mocks, finish within 90 minutes, and can explain why each missed answer was wrong.
