About the exam

Databricks Certified Data Analyst Associate

The Databricks Certified Data Analyst Associate exam evaluates a candidate’s proficiency with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, assessing their ability to manage data with Unity Catalog — discovering, querying, cleaning and managing certified datasets; import data using the UI, S3 ingestion, Delta Sharing for external systems, API-driven intake, Auto Loader and the Marketplace; and execute and optimize queries for data analysis — creating views, performing aggregate operations, combining tables with joins, filtering, sorting, and analyzing queries using auditing, history, logs and Liquid clustering. The exam also covers building Dashboards and Visualizations, developing, sharing and maintaining AI/BI Genie spaces, data modeling with Databricks SQL, and securing data with best practices for storage and management. Individuals who pass can complete basic data analytics tasks — managing data, analyzing data and using dashboards. All SQL in this exam adheres to ANSI SQL standards.

Step-by-step preparation guide

Start here and follow this plan until exam day

Use PySpark.in as the preparation hub: first verify the official Databricks exam details, then study every domain, practise hands-on and finish with timed mock tests.

Roadmap links open official Databricks documentation or registration pages. Use those pages for source-of-truth exam details, then return to PySpark.in for practice and mocks.

Step 1Understand the exam blueprint

Know the nine sections, their weightings, the 45-question/90-minute format and the registration path before you study.

  • Read the official Data Analyst Associate exam guide and the summary on this page.
  • Note the heaviest sections: Executing queries with Databricks SQL (20%), Dashboards (16%) and Analyzing Queries (15%).
  • Confirm the $200 fee, 2-year validity, English delivery, and that all SQL adheres to ANSI SQL standards.
Step 2Platform, Unity Catalog & managing data

Be fluent in the platform core: components, Catalog Explorer, managed vs external tables, lineage and data cleaning.

  • Learn the core components: Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Databricks SQL, Lakeflow and the Marketplace.
  • Use Catalog Explorer for catalogs, schemas, managed vs external tables, certified tables, tags and lineage.
  • Clean data in SQL — remove invalid rows and handle missing values (NULL/NULLIF/COALESCE, dedup).
Step 3Databricks SQL & SQL Warehouses (20%)

The heaviest section: run and optimize queries, choose the right table type, and use the Assistant.

  • Practise joins (inner/left/right), set ops (UNION vs UNION ALL), filtering, sorting and aggregates (count, approx_count_distinct, summary stats).
  • Know when to use Streaming Tables vs Materialized Views, and dynamic vs materialized views.
  • Create managed and external tables (CREATE OR REPLACE keeps privileges/history) and use Delta time travel (bounded by VACUUM).
  • Use the Databricks Assistant (/explain, /generate) and understand the SQL Warehouse role.
Step 4Analyzing & optimizing queries (15%)

Find and fix slow queries, audit results, and speed up large-table filters.

  • Understand Photon and which analytical workloads it accelerates.
  • Use Query Insights, the Query Profiler and Query History (duration/I/O metrics) to find slow queries.
  • Apply Liquid Clustering to speed filtering on specific columns, and use query/result caching.
  • Fix broken queries — e.g. a missing GROUP BY — and use Delta history to validate/compare results.
Step 5Dashboards, visualizations & AI/BI Genie (28%)

Build and share AI/BI Dashboards, configure alerts, and develop Genie spaces.

  • Build AI/BI Dashboards with multi-tab layouts, parameters (feeding the query WHERE clause), and the right chart type.
  • Configure a SQL Alert with a threshold and destination, and schedule dashboard refresh; share/embed dashboards.
  • Create Genie spaces with sample questions, instructions, curated UC datasets and Trusted Assets.
  • Optimize Genie via feedback, accuracy tracking, benchmarks and metadata refresh; distribute via links/embeds.
Step 6Importing, modeling & securing data

Round out the rest: ingestion options, dimensional modeling and Unity Catalog security.

  • Know the ingestion paths: UI upload, S3, Delta Sharing, API intake, Auto Loader and Marketplace.
  • Apply star, snowflake and data vault schemas and align them with the medallion architecture (gold for BI).
  • Secure data with Unity Catalog roles/grants, the three-level namespace, row filters, column masks and PII protection.
Mock-test strategy

Use mocks to decide when you are exam-ready

Do not book the official exam after one lucky score. Use short mocks for diagnosis, full mocks for stamina, and review every wrong answer before retrying.

Book the official exam when:You score 80%+ twice in full mocks, finish within 90 minutes, and can explain why each missed answer was wrong.
